British Sugar – Engineers Break Room Refurbishment

British Sugar approached Select Office Furniture with a clear goal: to transform their engineers break room into a space that better supported their team’s wellbeing, comfort and day to day use. While the existing room was functional, it lacked cohesion and warmth, and did not reflect the level of care the organisation wanted to provide for its staff.

The brief was to deliver a modern and welcoming environment that balanced durability with comfort, and practicality with thoughtful design. As part of this office refurbishment in Bury St. Edmunds, the aim was to create a space that felt organised, inviting and fit for purpose for a high use working environment.

Office Design and Fit Out Approach

Our team provided a complete office design and fit out solution, managing the project from initial concept through to furniture supply and installation. The layout was carefully planned around the natural flow of the room, ensuring the space worked effectively for both group interaction and quieter moments of rest.

At the centre of the room, two large Mayan tables were installed to act as a shared hub. Their robust construction and clean contemporary styling make them ideal for daily use, team conversations and informal meetings. Around the edges of the space, matching round breakout tables were added to create flexible seating areas and offer quieter zones when needed.

This considered layout supports both collaboration and individual use, key principles of effective modern office design.

Seating Designed for Comfort and Durability

Seating was a major consideration due to the number of engineers using the space throughout the day. We supplied thirty Zest chrome frame cantilever chairs, upholstered in a two tone leather finish. These were selected for their durability, ease of maintenance and long term comfort, while also enhancing the modern look of the room.

To provide a more relaxed seating option, two Alton lounge chairs were introduced. These high backed chairs offer a softer, more comfortable place for staff to unwind during breaks, adding variety to the seating options within the space.

Storage and Organisation Solutions

Improving organisation was a key part of the refurbishment. A full wall of thirty grey oak lockers was designed and installed, providing secure and practical storage for the engineering team. The finish was chosen to integrate seamlessly with the rest of the furniture scheme, helping maintain a clean and cohesive appearance.

Effective storage plays an important role in successful office refurbishment projects, supporting a clutter free environment that is easier to maintain and more pleasant to use.

Bespoke Features and Finishing Touches

A bespoke PET felt pinboard featuring the British Sugar logo was added as both a functional and visual feature. It provides a central space for notices and updates while also offering acoustic benefits and reinforcing the company’s identity within the room.

To soften the industrial tones of the furniture and bring warmth into the space, large Strelitzia plants were introduced along with a selection of smaller succulents placed across the tables. These natural elements add texture, visual interest and a subtle biophilic touch, helping create a more welcoming and balanced environment.

The Result

The completed project delivers a refreshed and uplifting break room designed around the people who use it every day. The new layout improves functionality, supports better organisation and significantly enhances comfort, all while maintaining a professional and modern aesthetic.
