Thorntons Sugar appointed Select Office Furniture to design, supply and install the complete furniture package for their new offices in Bury St. Edmunds. The project formed part of a wider refurbishment, with the objective of creating a modern, functional and visually cohesive workspace that supports staff wellbeing, collaboration and everyday productivity.
Working closely with the client throughout the project, we delivered a fully coordinated office design and fit out solution across open plan office areas, reception, meeting rooms and executive spaces. The result is a professional and welcoming environment that balances contemporary design with ergonomic performance and bespoke detailing.
Office Design and Fit Out Approach
Select Office Furniture managed the project from initial space planning through to final installation, ensuring consistency across all areas of the building. The design focused on flexibility, comfort and visual cohesion, using a coordinated material palette and high quality office furniture suited to long term use.
This joined up approach allowed the new workspace to support different working styles while maintaining a strong and consistent identity throughout the offices.
Main Office Layout and Height Adjustable Workstations
The main office area was fitted with height adjustable desks, enabling staff to alternate between seated and standing positions throughout the day. Each workstation included under desk pedestals to provide practical personal storage while keeping the layout clean and uncluttered.
All furniture within the main office was finished in a Concrete and White colour scheme, creating a bright and contemporary working environment. Ergohuman fully adjustable mesh task chairs were supplied throughout, offering advanced ergonomic support for prolonged daily use.
To subtly divide the space while maintaining openness, planter cupboards were installed through the centre of the room. These introduce greenery, improve visual flow and contribute to a more relaxed and engaging workplace, key principles of modern office design.
Reception and Breakout Areas
The reception area was designed to create a strong first impression while providing a comfortable and welcoming waiting space. Grid planter systems were installed to add structure and visual separation without closing off the area.
A bespoke planter was manufactured to follow the curved reception wall, complemented by coordinated coffee tables, storage units and soft seating. All reception furniture was finished in Halifax Oak with Black detailing, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic that integrates seamlessly with the wider building design.
Meeting Rooms and Collaboration Spaces
Multiple meeting rooms were fitted out to support both large and small group collaboration. The main meeting room was designed to seat up to twelve people and features a large Halifax Oak meeting table paired with matching meeting chairs. These chairs were finished with teal blue metal frames and black upholstery, adding a subtle accent while maintaining a professional appearance.
A secondary meeting room was furnished for smaller meetings of up to four people, offering a quieter and more focused space. Both rooms follow the same material palette and detailing, reinforcing visual continuity throughout the building.
Manager’s Office
The manager’s office was furnished with an executive desk and a small meeting table, creating a versatile space suitable for focused work and informal discussions. Furniture finishes were kept consistent with the wider scheme, using Halifax Oak surfaces and teal blue metal detailing to reinforce a cohesive design language.
Planting and Biophilic Design
Live planting was supplied and installed throughout the building by Chantal at Grow My Wellbeing. This included planting within reception grid planters, bespoke planters and feature areas across office and meeting spaces.
The introduction of greenery adds natural texture and warmth to the environment while supporting staff wellbeing. This biophilic approach enhances comfort and contributes to a healthier and more enjoyable workspace.
